The Segway pisses me off. It is not only inefficient, complicated and expensive, it's slow too. The max speed of 12.5 mph is doubtless on flat, smooth ground and the device cannot travel faster than that on a downhill. Even if a Segway beat a fit cyclist up a steep hill (which I doubt it could), the cyclist would easily pass the Segway going down and then continue for up to 100 miles or more without stopping to charge for 8-10 hours. They also do not say exactly how far the Segway will go with riders of different masses. Could it be that the Segway's impressive 24 mile estimated range has been achieved with a 125lb rider going downhill with a brand new battery at the ideal operating temperature which was charged at its ideal charging temperature with no wind at all? Hmmm. With the rider fully upright, the Segway suffers from tremendous aerodynamic drag. Climbing a steep hill would probably devour a huge chunk of its battery and it would not travel anywhere near its max speed. Unlike an electric bicycle, a drained Segway cannot be pedaled home or to a charger. At 100 lbs it's a real porker too--even the heaviest bike is nowhere near that heavy. It bet it would be fun to drag a large 100 lb hunk of aluminum into a car or down the street. Speaking of weight, how much weight does one lose while riding a Segway? None at all would be my guess. A bicycle relies on a most elegant and simple use of gyroscopic forces to balance and stabilize itself perfectly. The Segway must use heavy metals, glass, steel, silicon, batteries, software, firmware and hardware. Ugh, I deal with that enough at work. The Segway does not even address the chief problems of a bicycle: limited payload and limited all-weather capability. It seems that the Segway has none of the advantages of a bicycle and all of the disadvantages. The Segway is merely another shiny, expensive object that only the upper middle class can afford--$3000-5000! That's a lot for a big toy with batteries! A $500 bicycle is a brilliant piece of lightweight simplicity; reliable, beautiful and much the same as the bikes professionals race all over the world. The name "Segway" bugs me too. It's just not that clever. Another big benefit to the Segway is the absolutely idotic posture of the rider. Standing erect and moving around on 2 wheels is a scene out of a bad sci-fi movie.

You'd better try one !
For sure if you live in countryside you don't need it !
Don't compare it to a bike, you'd better compare it to a car or the tube. Then you could see a real advantage to use it !
Segway is great, fun, practical and the new way to move in cities insterad of using your hummer !!!!
I have one and I use it every day unless to take my car to do 4 kms !
Hope you could change your mind on this machine ;)

Maybe I will try one! I'll always love bikes though.
Cheers
You really need to go and try one out.
I tried one. It has no advantages over a bike except that it allows the user to be lazy. It's worthless in snow/rain and it carries limited cargo. Sorry but the Segway is just a dumb name for a solution without a problem.
I just read that the Seg cost 100 million dollars to develop! They've sold only 30,000 (according to them). The poor suckers who invested lost a fortune on them. It's amazing that they continue manufacturing this loser of a product. Notice how Segway never, ever mentions the word "bicycle" in any company literature? The article that they wrote in Wikipedia about their own product doesn't say anything about bikes either. They know their product is nothing but overpriced hype.
yeah, for those of us who are physically capable of taking a bike, that's a better choice. but what about city dwellers or commuters with health problems that limit their physical exertion? it's easy to drive, quicker than walking, cheaper and easier on the environment than a car, and fun too.
if they were cheaper, i'd buy one for my mother-in-law, who can barely walk due to a bad hip and knees. it's cooler than a walker or a wheelchair, and she'd actually be able to enjoy a trip to the mall or a trip to the park.
Ah, true. The Seg would be good for the disabled. They used to think it would be a replacement for everyday walking. I think it's interesting that they are now going head-to-head with bicycles:

America needs the segway like a fish needs a segway to get to the rack where he locks his bike.
The Segway is a good idea for certain jobs such as meter maids in urban settings. But just imagine for a moment that the Segway DID actually take off in sales and everyone was riding them around. There would be no room for people to walk and even less room trying to navigate around all the other Segways. Its just to impractical for the masses to use. Its a novel, expensive toy for people who can afford it and a great tool for the very few job fields that can use it to improve efficiency and that’s all it will ever be.
